How to make a biweekly budget

If you are paid every two weeks, you get 26 paychecks a year, but your bills come monthly. That mismatch is why some months feel tight and others feel easy. A biweekly budget fixes it.

Why monthly bills and biweekly pay don’t line up

26 paychecks do not split evenly into 12 months. Most months have two paydays, but two months a year have three. If you plan with "two checks per month", one check may have to cover rent and the next cover almost nothing.

The fix: budget weekly, not per check

Convert both sides to weekly amounts. A $2,000.00 biweekly paycheck is $1,000.00 a week. A $1,450.00 monthly rent is $333.47 a week. Now every week looks the same, and every bill is funded by its due date no matter how the paydays fall.

ItemAmountWeekly
Paycheck (every 2 weeks)$2,000.00$1,000.00
Rent (monthly)$1,450.00$333.47
Electric (monthly)$120.00$27.60
Car loan (monthly)$385.00$88.54
Groceries (weekly)$150.00$150.00

What to do with the two "extra" paychecks

Because your bills are already covered week by week, the third paycheck in those two months is not needed for bills. Put it toward an emergency fund, a savings goal or an extra debt payment. In WKLY, money that is not budgeted shows up as Available Income, ready to move wherever you choose.
